The Export Market Development Grants (EMDG) reimburses expenses incurred for export promotional activities to existing and potential Australian exporters.

Applications are open between the 1 July and 30 November each year for promotional activities undertaken during the previous financial year. If you lodge through an approved EMDG Consultant, you have until 28 February the following year to lodge your application.

The period for self-lodged EMDG application for the 2014-15 grant year (or those lodged via non-approved EMDG consultants) ended 30 November 2015.

Approved EMDG Consultants are able to lodge claims on behalf of applicants up until mid-night (Australian Eastern Daylight Time) on 29 February 2016.

What support or funding is available?

Funding is provided to compensate eligible export businesses up to 50% of their promotional expenses over $15,000. The minimum grant is $5,000, the maximum $150,000. Each successful applicant may be entitled for up to eight consecutive grants.

Who can apply?

Any Australian individual, partnership, company, association, co-operative, statutory corporation or trust that has carried on export promotion activities during the year for which they wish to apply for an export grant.

What are the eligibility criteria?

For an applicant to be eligible they must have:

  • Income of less than $50 million per year;
  • Incurred expenses of at least $15,000 on export promotional activities in the previous financial year (first time applicants can use two years expenses);
  • Incurred the expenses while a resident of Australia; and

For goods or services to be eligible it must be one of the following

  • a good made in Australia
  • a good made outside Australia where Australia will derive a significant net benefit from its sale overseas
  • all services except those specified as ineligible in the EMDG Regulations
  • a tourism service (including accommodation, passenger transport or tours)
  • a conference or event held in Australia
  • an intellectual property right that mainly resulted from work done in Australia
  • a trademark that was owned, assigned or first used in Australia
  • know-how that mainly resulted from work done in Australia

How do I apply?

Applicants must complete the online application and lodge before 30 November each year. Applicants may chose to use the services of an approved EMDG Consultant who must lodge before 28 February of the following year.

To use the online application form you must hold, or apply for, an AUSkey. You will need your ABN and personal tax file number to do this. Visit the AUSkey website to register for an AUSkey and follow the prompts.

You will be prompted to submit relevant documents such as financial statements and information that explains your business and your product or service during the application process.

How will I know if I am successful?

Assessment of your application may vary from a telephone call to a visit to your premises.

Documents for expenses and export earnings should be available for audit verification. To find out more about the documents you need to have available, you can attend an EMDG coaching session in your area.

How will payments be made?

Grants are paid on assessment of an application under a split-payment system in two rounds.

Round 1 is an initial grant payment being 50% of total eligible expenses less $5,000 up to the maximum ceiling amount which is set each year. Round 2 is payment of the grant entitlement above the initial ceiling amount.
